TOGAF 9: ADM Preliminary phase

Objectives

The main objective of the Preliminary Phase is to determine and establish the Architecture Capability. This includes gathering business drivers and deciding what organizational context, structures, tools or architecture frameworks will be needed to support architecture work.

Approach

Where, what, why, who, and how we do architecture.

Establishing Architecture Capability include:

  • Establishing structure of Enterprise Architecture team, responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Tailoring TOGAF to your needs – if some ADM phase, deliverables, etc must be changed to fit organization
  • Adapting to other architecture and enterprise frameworks – if any other frameworks exist in organization
  • Identifying Architecture Principles

Techniques

Architecture Principle Template
Principles must be understandable, robust, complete, consistent and stable.

Inputs

  • Existing strategy
  • Business drivers and goals
  • Existing enterprise frameworks
  • Enterprise structure

Outputs

At the end of this phase, the EA team should be ready to follow an iteration of the ADM cycle. The outputs of the Preliminary Phase:

  • Organizational Model for Enterprise Architecture
  • Initial Repository where later all deliverables will be stored
  • Tailored TOGAF framework
  • Architecture Principles
  • Request for Architecture Work that describes the business imperatives behind the architecture work. Template.
